When the Boston Bruins visited President Barrack Obama in the White House to celebrate the team’s 2011 Stanley Cup championship, they did so without their all-star goaltender and team MVP Tim Thomas.
Thomas declined to meet with the President due to his political stance, and in doing so, has lit the hockey world on fire.

Shabby. Immature. Unprofessional. Self-centered. Bush league. Need I go on? All that and more applies to what Thomas did…
- Kevin Paul Dupont, The Boston Globe

Thomas has to realize that the tradition of bringing the team over to the White House is supposed to be above the political fray instead of generate it.
- Scott Mullin, The Rat Trick

Opinion on the matter has been pretty split. Some praise Thomas for standing up for his First Amendment right, while others blast him for being selfish and dishonoring his country with the display of disrespect.
It’s a very, very, thin line when politics enter the sports world. No matter your beliefs and what you stand for, there’s always going to be fanatics out there to literally crap all over  you and what you stand for.
Whether you disagree or not, Tim Thomas is still one hell of a goaltender, and could very well be on his way to his second straight Stanley Cup.
